Interior design trends seen at Germany’s IMM trade show

Each year, industry professionals from around the world travel to Cologne, Germany, for the IMM trade show, one of the largest interior design events on the planet. In January 2013, according to The Huffington Post, approximately 1,200 companies from more than 50 countries attended, showcasing the latest in home decor.

Most of the trade show focuses on furniture, so with that in mind, let's take a look at some of the up-and-coming styles you can incorporate in your space:

Bright colors – After years of neutral colors dominating interior design – perhaps resulting from attitudes about the Great Recession – bold, loud, colorful pieces are back. This includes Pantone's 2013 color of the year: Emerald.

Details – "It was evident at IMM that there is more attention to detail that would have otherwise been overlooked. I noticed things like alternate colored piping on chairs and neon painted trim on white tables," writes The Huffington Post.

Slim, light designs – Bulky sofas are being pushed aside in favor of chairs with thinner, slender frames. The source suggests that this may be a reflection of our technology – as our smartphones get slimmer, so does our furniture.
