Mad about metallics

If award show season has you feeling glitzy and glamorous, you're in luck! The metallic trend has risen in popularity lately and shows no signs of stopping this year.

"Whether it's silver, gold, bronze, platinum or nickel, there's a finish for you," writes Jen Wallace of fashion and lifestyle website Ecosalon. "And don't just think you are limited to accessories like framed mirror or candlesticks, the new metallics are being used in all sort of unexpected ways. Like wallpaper, fabrics, rugs, lighting fixtures, accessories, paint and more."

  • Accent wall: We've already spoke about the popularity of accent walls. This trend is expected to take 2014 by storm. Try adding metallic decals to your wall, or even opt for shimmery wallpaper.
  • Go for gold: Gold looks very chic in the home sector and can be achieved in numerous ways. For instance, gold curtains and drapes look great in the dining room, especially if you choose matching table linens. This metallic hue corresponds nicely with warm-toned shades, so choose crimson or deep magenta as complimentary colors.
  • Mix and match: If floor-to-ceiling metallic seems too overpowering, simply mix and match modern finishes and matte hues into your décor. For instance, if you're using metallic window coverings, select a solid color throw rug to create visual contrast.
