New York Fashion Week shows us top design trends

As New York Fashion Week concludes, check out the top trends seen on the runway and learn how you can apply them to create a stylish Milwaukee home.

  • Coordinating Prints: Last season, the runways were filled with models mixing prints (such as stripe tops and polka-dot skirts). Fashion week has revealed that in 2014 we will make a return to the simplicity of matching patterns. Whether you love floral designs or are mad about plaid, stick with a singular theme in your own home to stay on trend.
  • Metallic: Fashion designers Jason Wu, Diane von Furstenberg, and Ralph Rucci added metallic fabrics to the mix of their Spring 2014 collections. The shiny material plays up the use of silver, gold, and bronze. "The metallic trend comes back every year but this season the approach is less edgy futuristic, more silky and sophisticated," reports FashionMagazine.com.
  • Pastel Colors: Once reserved for baby clothes and nurseries, pastel colors are making a comeback in the adult world. Zac Posen and Marc Jacobs were just some of the big-name designers who made use of these light shades in their NYFW presentations. This trend is easy to pull-off in the home. Start by painting the desired room in your house with a subtle hue, such as mint green or pastel yellow. Bazaar's custom drapes and window decor will help bring the vision to life.
  • White: To further emphasize the simplicity of the upcoming season, pure white fabrics are showing up all over the runway. Top designers like Wu and Derek Lam especially used this color in their collections. "Lovers of minimalism will be pleased to see that this trend isn't going anywhere," reports Metro U.K.
